The Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) is the main Italian institute responsible for scientific-technical research, control and advice in public health. The total number of permanent staff is 1,427. As the technical and scientific body of the Italian National Health Service, ISS promotes public health through scientific research, surveys, controls and analytical tests in the different fields of health sciences. It collaborates with the Minister of Health in drawing up and implementing public health programmes. At present ISS comprises 7 Departments, 7 National Centres and 3 Services, in which each public health research sector is managed by a large number of qualified researchers and technicians. Role and main tasks in the project:
The Unit of Dosimetry of Ionizing Radiation and Radiation Damage of the Department of Technology and Health carries out research activities in: dosimetry in medical applications, especially radiation therapy; identification of irradiated food and biomedical devices; retrospective dosimetry; Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of biological systems. The Laboratory is equipped with two EPR spectrometers and one OSL reader, besides other equipment for solid state dosimetry of ionizing radiation. ISS brings experience in EPR dosimetry of tooth enamel into the project. Within the field of retrospective dosimetry, the Unit participated in three projects supported by EU: DOSE RECONSTRUCTION, EPR DOSE RECONSTRUCTION and SOUL, as well as some INCOCOPERNICUS work. The Unit is also participating in an ISO group for standardization of EPR retrospective dosimetry at the international level.
